I am a mature, African American professional woman. I have been overweight most of my adult life. I am postmenopausal with anxiety, mild depression, arthritis (knees) and digestive disorders. I have had much difficulty staying on a food plan (diet). I crave sugar and carbohydrates. My dosha is Kapha. I am drawn to Ayurveda because of the focus on a wholistic approach to healing along with creating good gut health. Do you think you could help me adhere to a Ayurvedic lifestyle--I am not interested in temporary wellness, but rather a lifestyle shift. Thanks.

I agree with you, let's wait until June. You can reserve an appointment online now for early-mid June (no payment reqd). There are many websites out there on Ayurveda - I don't really use them. I prefer books and texts written by well-known and authentic Vaidyas (Ayurvedic doctors). Check out books by Vaidya Atreya Smith (my teacher), Dr Vasant Lad, Dr David Frawley and Dr Robert Svoboda. At your first visit, Vedic Health will provide you with a lot of material on Ayurveda, including a wonderful eBook written by Dr Suresh, articles, recipes, daily routines, and much more.
Thanks Amita. I am very interested in getting started. However, since a Zoom visit is less than thorough, would the appointment consist of a conversation about my conditions giving a better sense of what I hope to get out of your treatments? I'm not sure how that would work or be helpful.
The federal government is gradually making plans to reopen certain agencies as soon as June 3rd. Hopefully, the same with MD? I can be patient until then. If MD is not open by first week in June, I will reconsider Zoom (not sure how much could be accomplished using Zoom)?
Secondly, if you could suggest a website that you find the info. to give an honest overview of Ayurvedic and how it works--that would be great. In the meantime, I took your Body Type Test. I'm Vata/7; Pitta/1 and Kapha/15. Someone suggested try Chyawanprash to be taken daily. What do you think?
Thanks.
Once the state mandate is lifted, our clinic will re-open. In the meantime, I'm able to meet and discuss the patient's concerns over Zoom. We don't take insurance, but we have many flexible options to pay, and all follow-ups are priced low ($35-$50) to keep it affordable for everyone. We see everyone who comes to us, regardless of how and when they can pay.
Dear Writer, you hit the nail on the head. That is exactly what Ayurveda is - a lifestyle shift. A change in how we view our lives, from eating and acting according to the whims and fluctuations of our feeble minds to making intelligent choices according to the needs of our body and spirit, felt within us when we tune inwards. Just from reading, it sounds that your cravings for sugar and carbs are due to hormonal imbalance, not uncommon post menopause, as are your other noted symptoms. Ayurveda addresses the root cause by balancing the doshas (in your case, focus on Vata and Kapha, since Vata becomes dominant after menopause) and supporting the glands in order to provide sufficient hormonal output. With dietary changes to align with our doshas, and herbal supplements that target our weak points, women often experience an incredible shift - in energy, mood, digestion, etc - often feeling better than they were before menopause. We go through a number of changes as we age, and this transition if supported with the timeless wisdom of Ayurveda can be not just smooth but transforming, uplifting, and grounding deep into feeling whole again. I am happy to guide you with Ayurveda and help you experience the joy of this phase of life - as Ayurveda describes, when a woman finally knows herself.
